While most of my compatriots thought I'd disappeared to some forgotten town at the foot of
Pohorje mountains, my first evenings in Maribor revealed a city with a modest but persistent
independent cultural scene. Guided by the knowledgeable Danilo, whose insights proved
invaluable, I discovered cultural spaces that comprise a carefully balanced ecosystem. My co-resident, photographer Sanja, captured these spaces with an eye that revealed layers I might have otherwise missed.

Pekarna surprised me with its scale – a former military barracks transformed into a
multimedia center larger than the city's size would suggest. During that same week, Uroš
Kaurin showed me through GT22, where spaces are practically repurposed for creative work
that might go unnoticed by casual visitors. Meeting artist Nataša Berk provided valuable
insight into how local creators navigate these spaces and build sustainable practice despite
limited infrastructure. Kibla presents impressive technical capabilities with staff who
prioritize artistic needs over bureaucratic demands, while Mariborka impressed as a
thoughtfully curated bookshop reflecting the citty's cultural undercurrents.

In my three visits to Ljubljana, I found the capital's independent scene more dispersed but
with notable highlights. Krater stood out as a compelling space dedicated to bio art, where
science and creativity blend in explorations of living systems. Osmoza offered another
intriguing dimension to the city's cultural fabric, while Kela, a photo collective, demonstrated
technical precision and conceptual ambition rivaling work from much larger cultural centers.

The independent cultural landscape in Slovenia thrives through connection and community
rather than spectacle or excess. What the scene might lack in resources, it makes up for in
resourcefulness and genuine creative exchange. The Slovenian approach of creating
purposeful spaces where ideas can flourish offers a refreshing alternative to market-driven
cultural production, suggesting promising possibilities for independent scenes anywhere
willing to prioritize substance over scale.
