The independent scene in Kranj is closely intertwined with the so-called alternative scene,
as the spaces have practically the same visitors, borrow and exchange equipment and
cooperate with each other. If the center of the independent scene in Kranj is the »Layer
House«, the »SubArt trainstation« is the center of alternative, urban culture. Once a squat,
which was created as a result of the eviction of the former »Bazen« squat, after a few years
it was bought by the users and the SubArt association was established. "Train", as the locals
call it, is primarily a space for concerts and workshops. However, it is not negligible that the
complex also houses an indoor skate park, a music studio and a screen printing studio. The
space can accommodate up to 200 visitors and hosts approximately 80 events per year. The
space was introduced to us by Darjan Kruševac - Darči, who was already active in "Bazen"
and has been the leader of the collective since the very beginning of SubArt.
In Kranj, we also visited the studio of independent artist Maruša Štibelj, who works with
collage and also organizes the international collage festival Kaos.
In the same week, our residents presented themselves to us in the Layer House gallery,
where they talked in a relaxed atmosphere about their past projects and ideas that arose
during their residency in Slovenia.
