The artistic collective Atelijeri Žitnjak was established in 2004 by artists utilizing studios within the old elementary school complex on Žitnjak, which the City of Zagreb had transformed into 13 studios for artists in 2003. In 2005, the AŽ Gallery was inaugurated as a versatile exhibition venue that has hosted nearly two hundred exhibitions and various cultural activities, including performances, presentations, film screenings, and workshops for both children and adults, as well as international artist residencies. Atelijeri Žitnjak was inspired by numerous global cultural centers located in (post)industrial areas, aiming to develop an art hub that would aid in the cultural and social revitalization of the overlooked industrial zone of Žitnjak. Through its programming, Atelijeri Žitnjak has established itself as a significant art center in Zagreb, reflecting contemporary trends found in leading European cities. This initiative has played a crucial role in revitalizing the cultural landscape of the area and promoting a more decentralized cultural offering in the city. Over time, Atelijeri Žitnjak has evolved into the cultural heart of the Žitnjak industrial zone, earning the title Center of the Periphery. By expanding its focus beyond exhibitions to encompass broader efforts aimed at enhancing the local cultural and social landscape, Atelijeri Žitnjak has become an artistic enclave dedicated to promoting peripheral, alternative, and marginalized voices. In various projects and events, we make efforts to engage the local community and institutions.
